Water:
What's Actually in Your Tap

The EPA regulates 91 contaminants. Over 60,000 chemicals are used in the United States. The math matters β€” and so does what's flowing through your pipes.

The Regulatory Gap No One Talks About

The Safe Drinking Water Act regulates 91 contaminants in US tap water. The EPA estimates that over 60,000 chemicals are actively used in the United States.

That gap β€” between what exists in the water and what is regulated β€” represents a significant and largely unacknowledged public health problem. The EPA has been testing for unregulated chemicals in tap water since 1996. As of the most recent assessments, only one newly identified contaminant has moved toward actual regulation, and the Environmental Working Group's ongoing water quality analysis of 30 million state water records has found pollutants in water utilities' testing consistently since 2010.

Being told your water is "safe" means it meets current legal limits for 91 substances β€” not that it is free of contaminants.

What Has Been Found in American Tap Water

Beyond fluoride (covered on its own page), documented tap water contaminants include:

Lead
Neurotoxin β€” linked to IQ reduction, behavioral problems, autism markers in children; no safe level for children

The Bathing Problem

Water quality isn't only a drinking issue. Chlorine, chloramines, and other volatile compounds can be absorbed through the skin and inhaled as steam during showering β€” often at higher total exposure than from drinking the same water. Whole-house or shower filtration addresses this; drinking filtration alone does not.

Water Filtration: What Independent Testing Actually Shows

Most water filter marketing is based on manufacturer-funded NSF certification under ideal lab conditions β€” spiked water samples, fresh membranes, optimal pressure and pH. Independent consumer lab testing (Tap Score, SGS, ConsumerLab, Water Filter Guru) consistently shows real-world performance is significantly lower. This matters especially for fluoride and pharmaceuticals, where the gap between claimed and actual removal is largest.

Do not drink RO water long-term. RO strips all minerals β€” it is dead water that will leach minerals from your body over time. RO options listed here are for people with no better option currently available. Your goal should be spring water (findaspring.com), or a quality whole-house carbon system β€” not RO as your drinking water source. Always remineralize: Quinton Marine Plasma or a quality mineral concentrate added back to any demineralized water.

On pharmaceutical removal: No home filter brand has published a comprehensive independent pharmaceutical panel (statins, SSRIs, beta blockers, estrogen metabolites, antibiotics, NSAID metabolites) in a single study. RO membrane + activated carbon is the best-available technology by published science, but no specific branded unit has been fully independently verified for the full drug spectrum.

AquaTru β€” Countertop RO, strong independent test record

4-stage RO, IAPMO certified (independent body). Independent Tap Score tests confirmed fluoride elimination and PFAS non-detect. RO membrane removes 95–99% of most pharmaceuticals by mechanism. No installation required β€” countertop. Produces demineralized water; use spring water or Quinton for drinking, AquaTru for cooking/ice/pets. ~$300–$450 unit, ~$70–$100/yr filters.

Clearly Filtered β€” Best independently-tested pitcher for fluoride & hormones

Pitcher + under-sink versions. Publishes third-party lab data on its website. Independent tests confirmed fluoride elimination, 99%+ atrazine removal, and 99.2% average removal of three estrogen compounds β€” highest of any tested pitcher for hormone removal. Not RO β€” uses proprietary multi-stage carbon + ion exchange. ~$90 pitcher + $65/filter (every 100 gallons).

Pure Effect β€” Best for fluoride without activated alumina

Under-counter multi-stage system using proprietary FluorSorb-MAX media β€” specifically aluminum-free, directly addressing the documented aluminum leaching problem of activated alumina-based fluoride stages (including Berkey PF-2). Independent EPA-method testing: 100% fluoride removal. Also removes pharmaceuticals, radioisotopes, heavy metals, bacteria, VOCs. ~$350–$600. pureeffectfilters.com.

Whole-House Carbon Filtration

Most people think about water filtration as a drinking concern. It is also a breathing and skin absorption concern. A 10-minute hot shower in chlorinated water produces inhalation exposure that can exceed what you absorb from drinking tap water all day β€” because lung absorption of volatile compounds goes direct to bloodstream, bypassing gut filtration. A 20-minute bath has a higher total chlorine absorption load than drinking 8 glasses of the same water. An RO filter under the sink does nothing for shower steam, bath absorption, or kitchen steam. Whole-house carbon filtration addresses more total daily exposure vectors than drinking-only filtration.

What it removes: Chlorine, chloramine (requires catalytic carbon β€” standard GAC does not remove chloramine), THMs, VOCs, many agricultural chemicals. What it does not remove: Fluoride, heavy metals, nitrates, or pharmaceuticals β€” those require RO or targeted media for drinking water. Cost: $300–$1,000 installed Β· $100–300/yr maintenance.

What to avoid:

  • β€’ Berkey with PF-2 fluoride cartridges: Independent tests showed 50–78% actual fluoride removal vs. 99.75% claimed. PF-2 filters leach aluminum oxide β€” one test measured 15x above recommended aluminum limits in brand-new filters. As of 2023–2025, Black Berkey replacement elements are effectively off the US market due to EPA Stop Sale Orders.
  • β€’ Kangen / ionizers / pH-altering devices: Do not filter contaminants. Artificially alkalizing water disrupts stomach acid pH. $3,000–$5,000+ with no clinical evidence of superiority to properly filtered and remineralized water.
  • β€’ Remineralization cartridges: Typically contain industrial calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide β€” inorganic, isolated minerals. Not the same as natural spring water mineral content. Activated alumina in fluoride stages leaches aluminum. These do not replicate Quinton or spring water.
  • β€’ Water softeners on drinking lines: Use sodium ion exchange β€” the result is high-sodium water that is more chemically aggressive and leaches lead and copper from pipes more readily. Bypass your drinking line if you have a softener.

Test your water independently: A manufacturer test strip does not verify fluoride or pharmaceutical removal. Check your local tap baseline at EWG Tap Water Database. Request a full panel from Tap Score for comprehensive contaminant data.

Water Structuring: Restoring Life to Your Water

When water is separated from its natural source in the earth and exposed to pollutants, chemicals, and electromagnetic radiation, research suggests it loses its organized molecular structure β€” becoming less bioavailable and less able to support healthy cellular function. Dr. Gerald Pollack's work at the University of Washington on EZ (Exclusion Zone) water β€” the gel-like fourth phase of water found in biological systems β€” demonstrates that structured water behaves differently in living tissues than bulk unstructured water. EZ water forms at surfaces and is the form of water found inside healthy cells.

Water structuring is the process of attempting to approximate that organization after filtration or processing has disrupted it. Spring water carries this structure naturally from its movement through earth and rock β€” a coherence that industrial treatment, pipes, and chemical exposure cannot replicate. Filtered or treated water does not carry that natural coherence. Structuring tools can meaningfully improve the biological properties of processed water, but they are not a substitute for water that has never been disrupted in the first place.

What to Look For in a Water Restructuring Tool

If you are evaluating a water structuring device, the relevant question is whether it actually does what it claims β€” specifically, whether it restores coherent molecular organization to water in a way that is measurable and meaningful to biology. Not all products in this category are equivalent. Questions worth asking:

  • β†’ Does it restore EZ water properties β€” reduced surface tension, increased bioavailability, measurable structural change?
  • β†’ Is there independent testing β€” not just manufacturer claims β€” showing before/after changes in water properties?
  • β†’ Does it create coherence, or merely change pH (pH change β‰  structured water)?
  • β†’ Is it passive (no electricity, no chemicals) β€” relying on geometry, frequency, or natural material interactions rather than chemical or electrical alteration?
  • β†’ Does the water produced behave differently in biological systems β€” improved hydration at the cellular level, not just taste?
Restored EZ water properties
Improved cellular hydration
Reduced surface tension
Coherent molecular structure
Supports gut flora balance
No electricity or chemicals

The science foundation: Dr. Gerald Pollack β€” The Fourth Phase of Water (Ebner & Sons, 2013). University of Washington bioengineer. Rigorous peer-reviewed research on EZ water and how structured water behaves differently inside living systems. This is the most directly relevant body of work for understanding why water structure matters for cellular function and hydration.

The Memory of Water β€” In the Earth and In Your Body

Water is not a passive carrier. Research β€” from Dr. Masaru Emoto's crystallography studies on water's response to intention and environment, to Dr. Gerald Pollack's Nobel-prize-adjacent work on Exclusion Zone (EZ) water β€” suggests that water is a dynamic, information-carrying medium that responds to its environment and retains a kind of structural "memory" of what it has encountered.

In the body, your cells are approximately 70% water by molecule count. Cellular water is not free-flowing bulk water β€” it exists in a highly organized, gel-like EZ (structured) state adjacent to membranes, proteins, and organelles. This structured intracellular water is a medium through which cells communicate, store energy, and maintain biological function. Water that has lost its structure β€” through industrial treatment, chemical exposure, electromagnetic radiation, or long pipe transit β€” may be less capable of entering and maintaining this organized intracellular state.

Natural spring water that has moved through the earth β€” in contact with rock, mineral, and soil β€” carries a coherence and mineral intelligence that cannot be fully replicated by adding isolated minerals back into treated water. This is one of the reasons that adding mineral drops to reverse osmosis water, while helpful, does not produce the same hydration effect as drinking water that has never lost that structure.

Veda Austin: Water as a Living Language

New Zealand researcher Veda Austin has extended the water crystallography tradition into a body of work that is both scientifically provocative and visually stunning. Her method β€” called "Cryoscopy" β€” involves placing water in a petri dish with a specific object, image, word, or intent placed beneath or near it, then freezing it and photographing the ice crystal patterns that form at the interface between ice and liquid water.

What Austin documents consistently is that water appears to reflect the information in its environment back through the geometry of its crystalline structures β€” forming recognizable shapes, letters, symbols, and even representations of the objects placed near it. This is not claimed to be a controlled laboratory experiment with peer-reviewed validation. It is observational research, conducted over thousands of trials, that raises a fundamental question about the nature of water: is it merely a solvent and transport medium, or is it a responsive, intelligent, information-processing system?

What this means practically: If water retains structural information from its environment β€” from the words spoken near it, the electromagnetic fields it passes through, the emotions and intentions of the people handling it β€” then the water inside your body is not neutral. The water in your cells has been shaped by your history, your environment, your stress, and your inner state. This reframes hydration from a biochemical to a biological-energetic act. Structure your water. Speak to your water. Drink with intention. These are not new-age concepts β€” they are extensions of a body of observation that mainstream science has not yet caught up to.

Austin's work is available through her website and her book Water Is... (2021). Her ongoing research includes documentation of water responding to specific emotions, music, and prayer β€” consistent with Emoto's photographic tradition but using a distinct freezing methodology and a level of photographic detail that has made her work widely shared in integrative health communities.

House Filtration vs. Spring Water: What to Know

The recommendation here is simple: drink spring water. Local spring water found at findaspring.com or commercially bottled spring water β€” even in plastic β€” is the drinking standard. A verified water structuring tool can be used for additional coherence after filtration. Use filtration (whole-house carbon or RO) for bathing and showering β€” not for drinking. Understanding each method helps explain why.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

Among home filtration options, RO is generally the strongest method for heavy metals, PFAS, nitrates, and arsenic removal. Important caveat: independent testing consistently shows that real-world fluoride and pharmaceutical removal is lower than manufacturer certification claims, which are produced under ideal lab conditions. Membrane condition, water pressure, and temperature all affect actual performance β€” and most home users never test their output water to verify. Do not assume a certified unit is removing what the label says. RO water is "dead water" β€” stripped of all minerals β€” and is not the recommended drinking source. Use it for bathing and showering to reduce skin and lung exposure; drink spring water.

Distilled Water β€” Not for Daily Drinking

Distillation removes virtually all contaminants β€” including fluoride, heavy metals, and PFAS β€” but produces completely demineralized, aggressively leaching water. Distilled water is "dead water" in the most literal sense: it has no mineral content, no structure, and no biological organization. Because it is essentially pure Hβ‚‚O without dissolved solids, it will actively pull minerals from whatever it contacts β€” including the tissues, bones, and extracellular matrix of the person drinking it. Regular long-term consumption of distilled water depletes electrolytes and trace minerals and has been associated with cardiovascular and bone health concerns in populations dependent on very low-mineral water. Do not use distilled water as your primary drinking water. It is not a safe substitute for spring water, and adding mineral drops after the fact does not restore the coherent mineral structure that natural spring water carries. The only appropriate use of distilled water is in specific short-term detox or cleansing protocols under clinical guidance β€” not daily hydration.

pH / Alkaline Water Ionizers (including Kangen-style devices) β€” Not Recommended

Alkaline water ionizers β€” including Kangen and similar devices β€” are heavily marketed in wellness, biohacking, and alternative health communities, and are frequently sold by practitioners and health coaches as a cornerstone of optimal hydration. This is not a recommendation shared here. These devices electrically alter the pH of water β€” they do not add minerals, they do not restore molecular structure, and they do not create anything resembling the mineral alkalinity of natural spring water. The body tightly regulates blood pH within a narrow range regardless of what you drink; the stomach immediately acidifies any water consumed; the "alkalinity" of ionized water does not reach the bloodstream in the form it enters the body. What these devices produce is electrically altered water with a temporarily high pH β€” not structured, mineralized, coherent water. They also do not remove fluoride, PFAS, pharmaceuticals, or heavy metals. People spend thousands of dollars on these systems and may actually be consuming water that is less biologically useful than what they started with β€” while missing the real variables (structure, minerals, contaminant removal). If you already own one, adding a thorough pre-filtration stage for contaminant removal is essential; the device itself does not address the problem.

Natural Spring Water (best option β€” local source or bottled)

Spring water that has moved through rock and earth arrives mineralized, structured, and coherent in ways that processed and remineralized water cannot fully replicate. The mineral content is in its natural ionic form, the water has not been exposed to chlorine or industrial treatment, and its structure has been maintained or enhanced by movement through the earth. If you have access to a tested, clean natural spring source, this is the ideal drinking water. findaspring.com maintains a map of natural spring sources worldwide. Test before drinking.

If buying bottled spring water, read the label carefully: look for "natural spring water" as the source β€” not "purified water," "drinking water," or "reverse osmosis water" bottled under a spring-sounding name. The label must state the spring source. More importantly: avoid ozonated spring water. Many commercial spring water brands add ozone as a preservative β€” it is listed on the label as "ozonated" or "treated with ozone." Ozone (O₃) is a powerful oxidant; in water it can react with naturally occurring organic compounds to form bromate, a compound the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies as a possible human carcinogen (Group 2B). Ozonation also disrupts the natural mineral and biological properties of the water. Look for spring water with no added treatments. Simple, single-source, untreated β€” that is what you are looking for.

Whole House Filtration

A whole-house carbon block or KDF/carbon filter at the point of entry removes chlorine, chloramines, and volatile compounds absorbed through skin and inhaled as steam during bathing. This addresses the skin and lung exposure problem. The recommended layered approach: whole-house carbon filtration (for bathing, laundry, and cooking exposure) + spring water for drinking + a verified water structuring tool for additional coherence.

Quinton Marine Plasma β€” Minerals & Coherence Support

Quinton Marine Plasma is harvested from deep-ocean vortex plankton blooms, where the mineral profile is closest to human blood plasma. The ionic trace mineral ratio of ocean plasma has been studied since RenΓ© Quinton's work in the early 1900s, where marine plasma was shown to be interchangeable with blood plasma in supporting biological function. It is available in isotonic form (diluted to match blood plasma concentration) and hypertonic form (full-strength, used in specific clinical applications).

One consideration worth understanding: commercial bottled spring water β€” even genuine spring water β€” has typically been sitting in bottles on pallets, in warehouses, and on store shelves for months to years. Water that has been removed from its source, exposed to light and temperature fluctuation, and stored in plastic loses biological vitality over time. Adding Quinton to bottled spring water can help restore some of the mineral coherence that has diminished in transit and storage. It is not the same as water fresh from the earth β€” nothing is β€” but it is a meaningful support for water that has been on a shelf.

Mineral drops restore mineral content. Quinton restores mineral content in its closest-to-biological ratio and form. Neither fully replicates natural spring water at the source, which carries mineral intelligence embedded in living, moving water β€” but both are meaningfully better than drinking unmineralized RO or distilled water.

Here's a number that might surprise you. The EPA estimates over 60,000 chemicals are used in the United States. The Safe Drinking Water Act regulates 91 of them.

Your tap water passes the legal test. But the legal test was only designed for 91 substances.

The Environmental Working Group has analyzed 30 million state water records since 2010. What they've consistently found is that water utilities detect pollutants that are present, but unregulated β€” meaning no legal limit exists, no action is required, and no one has to tell you they're there.

Lead. Chromium-6. Mercury. Arsenic. PFAS β€” the "forever chemicals" from Teflon and firefighting foam. Pharmaceutical residues β€” estrogens, antidepressants, antibiotics β€” that pass through the body and through water treatment. Atrazine β€” a herbicide that is a potent endocrine disruptor even at parts per trillion. And of course, fluoride.

Here's something most people don't realize: water quality isn't just a drinking problem. When you shower in chlorinated, chemically treated water, you absorb compounds through your skin and inhale them as steam. Studies have shown that a 10-minute shower can expose you to more chlorine than drinking 8 glasses of the same water. So drinking filtered water while showering in unfiltered water is only part of the solution.

The most important thing you can do today is look up your own water supply. The EWG Tap Water Database β€” ewg.org/tapwater β€” lets you enter your zip code and see exactly what contaminants have been detected in your local water utility. It compares against health benchmarks, not just legal limits. What you find might be very different from "safe."

Erin Brockovich also maintains a community health map at communityhealthbook.com documenting contamination issues by location.

Beyond knowing what's in your water, there's something else most people aren't told β€” tap water that's been treated, piped, and exposed to chemicals loses its natural molecular structure. It becomes less bioavailable, less able to support your body's systems.

Water structuring is the process of restoring that coherent molecular organization β€” and there are tools designed specifically to do this after your water has been filtered. Look for a passive structuring device that restores EZ water properties and has independent verification of what it actually changes in the water. The science behind this is in Dr. Gerald Pollack's work on the fourth phase of water β€” worth looking into if this is new to you.

You are 60-70% water. What goes into that water β€” what you drink, what you bathe in β€” matters enormously. The information to make better choices is available to you right now.
